Report for 23/24 Aug

Week 19 23/24 Aug

The first issue of the season was decided as Boston 2nd secured promotion in their first season in the League. Also Aisthorpe, in Division Two, slipped into a position where they can not now avoid relegation.

In the Premier League Scothern’s title chances took a knock as they lost in a close finish at Blankney. Martin retained second place with victory at bottom side North Scarle. Lindum beat Hartsholme in another close game while Cherry Willingham moved another step towards retaining their title with a resounding victory at Morton.

In Division One Middle Rasen saw their promotion chances severely dented as they lost at bottom side Winthorpe in the closest finish of the weekend and Saxilby won with ease against Old Lincolnians.

In Division Two it was all about games at the bottom with Aisthorpe losing to Hykeham while Branston gave late notice that they could not raise a side to visit Nettleham.

In Division Two Boston easily beat Heighington, virtually ending the villagers hopes of going up. South Clifton moved into third place in a low scoring game with Nocton and Owmby beat Rustons in the days highest scoring match.

On Saturday the title race is still a two horse race with both Saxilby and Morton beating Reepham and Washingborough respectively.

Cherry Willingham visited Morton looking to pick up another victory on their way to yet another title. They were also seeking a league double and got it in convincing fashion. The home side batted first making only 85, two runs less than they did in the corresponding away game. Tim Shooter then hit an unbeaten 58 to see Cherry win by nine wickets. This did Morton’s title hopes no good at all and in actual fact only Cherry and second placed Martin, of the top five sides managed victories this week. Martin visited bottom and still winless North Scarle and came away win a 34 runs victory. Martin batted first making only 158 with David Gollop, coming in at seven, top scoring with 60 . Top bowler for Scarle was their veteran spinner Jeff Kemp with figures of 10-4-16-4. Scarle batted to the penultimate over but were bowled out for 124. Steve Scott returned figures of 5-27 for the victors. Also slipping up were fourth placed Hartsholme who turned in one of their poorest performances of the season at Lindum. The home side amassed only 115-7 with the top scorers being Tom Wright with 37 not out and Oliver Guillatt 32 while Dave Smith took 3-10 in ten overs for Hartsholme. When the visitors batted only Martin Burnett (29) of their side reached double figures with them being bowled out for 76. The best bowler for Lindum was Ben Morrison with 4-11 from 4.5 overs. Despite defeat Hartsholme picked up sufficient points to climb above Morton into third position. The final side in the top five to come undone were Scothern who visited Blankney. The home side batted first and amassed the weekend’s top score with 192-2. This included a second wicket stand of 106 between skipper Will Carter and Lee Allman (43 not out). Opener Carter was run out for 98 in the penultimate over of the innings. In Scothern’s reply Blankney got wickets at crucial times to see their visitors bowled out for 160. Gus Worland (21), Rob Spaight (37) and Ian Brown (38) all looked capable of taking their sides to the target but Worland, back after a sabbatical, was run out while the other two were well caught in the field.

In Division One the top two were inactive but third placed Middle Rasen failed to take advantage going down at bottom side Winthorpe. Here the home side were bowled out for just 94 but on the day it was a big enough score as they then skittled Rasen out for 76. After being in the doldrums for much of the season Saxilby got their season going with their third win in a row. This allowed them to move into fourth place as their visitors Old Lincolnian’s moved in the opposite direction. The visitors batted first with Matt Lamming making 76 of their total of 115-9. The next best score was Brian Westgate with 13. For Saxilby Tom Mangham collected 5-13 in five overs. Saxilby reached the target for the loss of three wickets with Colin Green 39 not out.

In Division Two only one game took place and this saw Aisthorpe beaten for the ninth time in thirteen games. On this occasion it was Hykeham who beat them but only by 38 runs. Hykeham set a target of 148 with Aisthorpe closing on 110-9. This defeat has virtually decided Aisthorpe’s fate with relegation looking assured.

A side who will be coming up in their place are Boston 2nd, who booked their promotion place after beating one of the sides with an outside chance of promotion, Heighington. Their vicotry was fairly simple with them bowling Heighington out for 88 and making the target for the loss of two wickets. Just thirteen points separate second and sixth placed sides in this league with South Clifton moving one point above Heighington into third place after their home win against Nocton. Here Nocton gave themselves some hope of victory after veteran bowler David Glew returned the seasons’ fourth best figures with 7-22 as Clifton were bowled out for 91. Top scorers for the home side were Andy Coverdale 25 and Andy Fotheringham 20. Unfortunately, with only nine men, Nocton were then bowled out for 56 with S. Lem making 19 and R. Tonge 18. Clifton shared the wickets with Coverdale taking 3-6, D. Davies 3-26 and Fotheringham 2-13.  Back into the promotion challenge come Owmby, who, although fifth, are just nine points off second place. They picked up another win as they beat Rustons in one of the highest scoring games of the weekend. Rustons batted first, making 188-5 with Martin Hickson top scoring with 103 not out (the only century of the weekend), supported by Paul Chambers with 53. Owmby then made the target for the loss of seven wickets with their top scorer being Ciaron Deggan 78 not out. Also in this league bottom side Millers picked up a win as they overcame their visitors Aswarby. The visitors were bowled out for 61 with Millers making the total with three wickets down.

In the Saturday League the title race is still on as the top two both won. Morton visited Wahsingborough posting a total of 188-8. Washingborough in reply were bowled out for 112 with Ken Williams making 52. Second placed Saxilby hosted Reepham and batting first they set a target of just 112 with Wayne Gelder top scorer with 26. For Reepham Tom Dalton took 3-8 in four overs. Reepham were then bowled out for only 64 with Dalton then top scoring with 21. For Saxilby Tom Mangham took 3-10 and Ian Burnett 3-13

Week 18 16/17 Aug

The over night downpour saw lots of very damp wickets for Sundays games but only the Major Hoult Cup final was unable to take place. This rain caused a multitude of low scoring games with no side making a score of 200.

In the Premier League Cherry Willingham look to be marching on to another title as Andy Johnson delivered the weekends best bowling figures to beat Market Rasen. Morton lost ground as they went down to Scothern. Martin moved up to second with victory over Blankney while North Scarle lost for the eighth time, going down to Hartsholme.

In Division One, third placed Middle Rasen missed the chance to close the gap on the leaders as Saxilby beat them in the closest finish of the weekend. Washingborough swapped places with Old Lincolnians in mid table and Bassingham won the bottom of the table clash against Winthorpe.

In Division Two leaders BBH slipped up at home to Bardney. Fulbeck conceded their game against Hykeham while Nettleham 2nd won their bottom of the league game at Aisthorpe.

In Division Three Boston 2nd were the first team to pass 200 points as they overcame Rustons while Aswarby won at Nocton, who amassed the weekend’s lowest total.

On Saturday another side, Washingborough 2nd, failed to fulfil their game. They should have played Timberland while leaders Morton lost in a close finish at second placed Saxilby. In this game the highest individual score of the weekend was made, which was only 69.

Unfortunately the Major Hoult cup final between Heighington and Waddington failed to take place with the Blankney square unfit due to the rainfall received. A new date is to be arranged.

Premier leaders Cherry Willingham had bowled Market Rasen out for just 89 in their previous meeting but this weekend on a damp home wicket it took them less than 16 overs to skittle them out for just 49. Top scorer for Rasen was Ian Williams with 20 while ex-Rasen player, Andy Johnson picked up 6-22 and Joe Dobson 4-26. At one points Rasen were 21 without loss! Cherry did not have things all their own way as Dan Norburn picked up four home wickets for 29 runs before opener Tim Shooter, with a top score of 16, saw them to victory. Second placed Morton visited Scothern looking for a league double but lost by 5 wickets in a reduced overs game. Morton made just 113 which Scothern reached for the loss of 5 wickets. This allowed Martin, who had been quietly climbing up the table, to go above them as they won in a low scoring game against Blankney. The visitors were bowled out for 97 with Jim Pearse top scorer with 36 not out. Martin lost five wickets on route to victory with Steve Scott taking them there with a swift 48 not out, including five sixes.  Hartsholme retained fourth place as they picked up a league double at bottom side North Scarle.  The home side posted a total of just 121 which Hartsholme reached for the loss of three wickets with Ed Bosworth making 61.

In Division One, third placed Middle Rasen could have been confident of closing the gap on lowly Saxilby with the top two inactive. On the day it was not to be as Saxilby posted a total of 151 with Wayne Gelder rescuing the innings with a blazing 52, including five sixes in one over. Gary Bierlein picked up 5-39 for Rasen. The home side looked on course for victory as Gary (43) and Karl Bierlein (49) opened with a stand of 91. Then some sound fielding and positive bowling from Mark Evans (4-38) and Tom Mangham (5-39) saw them restricted to a total of 131-9 to lose by the narrow margin of 15 runs. Victory for Saxilby saw them rise to fourth, their highest position of the season. Previously fourth placed side Old Lincolnians visited sixth placed Washingborough on the back of two defeats. This became three as they failed to chase at total of 141-8, closing 60 runs short on 81-8. This allowed Washingborough to go above them as Old Lincolnians slipped to sixth. In the bottom of the table game Bassingham too were looking to end a two match losing run as they entertained Winthorpe. This they did as Dave Lewis, with 67, helped his side to the weekends highest score of 162-6, before the visitors were bowled out for 123.

In Division Two leaders BBH were set to take their points total passed the 200 mark when they hosted a Bardney that had won only once in their last four games. BBH batted first but were bowled out for 124 with Matt Wynhorst top scorer with 48 and Mark Conyers Bardney’s chief wicket taker with 3-33.  Jack McGill with 51 then helped Bardney to a seven wicket victory. The only other game in this league was at the other end of the table with Aisthorpe still in search of their first win. They hosted Nettleham, who despite being second to bottom, had won their last two games. Nettleham batted first making 136 and then bowled the home side out for 65 to win by the biggest winning margin of the weekend.

In Division Three leaders Boston topped the 200 point mark as they completed a league double at Rustons. Here Gary Thirkell had bowling figures of  6.2-4-4-5 and Dave Gilding 4-2-6-2 as Rustons were dismissed for 65. Top scorer for Rustons was A. Gooch with 26. Boston’s opener Mark McDowell carried his bat with 28 as the visitors won by six wickets. Rustons best bowler was L. Buick with 2-2. At the other end of the league, Aswarby, who had won only once in six games, visited Nocton who they had beaten back in June. The home side themselves were on the back of a three match losing run but their fortunes were not to change as they were bowled out for the lowest score of the weekend, just 39. Aswarby themselves lost three wickets before picking up a welcome win.

In the Saturday League, the only game was a top of the table clash at Saxilby who hosted leaders Morton. Like their senior side this proved to be a closely fought game for Saxilby. Morton batted first and made 151 with opener Steve Crooks making 69 and Chris Green taking 5-39 for the home side. Saxilby then saw good scores from Green (33), Burton (23) and Gelder (40) but wickets fell and they were down to the last pair before Ady Putt (4 not out0 saw them home. Morton skipper Matt Gleadell picked up 6-38 for his side.

Week 17 9/10 Aug

In the first showpiece final of the season the honours went to Division One side Boston as they overcame Premier giants Scothern in the Premier Trophy final.

In a sparse Premier League programme Morton 1st missed the chance on closing the gap on leaders Cherry Willingham, losing at home to Martin.

With Boston 1st in cup action, Nettleham 1st closed the gap on them at the top to 17 points as they narrowly beat Washingborough 1st in a game which saw over 400 runs scored. Middle Rasen also kept themselves in the title race as they thrashed fourth placed Old Lincolnians. Similarly Saxilby 1st overcame Bassingham to register only their second win of the season.

In Division Two, Waddington’s challenge at the top took another knock as they lost at home to Nettleham in the closest finish of the weekend. Their defeat allowed Carholme to go second as they won at Fulbeck, here the seasons best bowling figures were recorded. Mid table Branston too saw their recent improvement take a knock as they went down to Hykeham while the game between Bardney and Aisthorpe was called off due to an unfit pitch.

In Division Three an inactive Boston 2nd saw their lead at the top reduced as Heckington destroyed bottom side Millers and Heighington went above Rustons with an away victory over them. Owmby got their season back on track as they hit picked up a victory over Nocton while South Clifton won at Aswarby where the home side were bowled out for the days’ lowest total.

On the previous day the two games were washed out.

In the Premier Trophy both Scothern and Boston were looking to pick up the trophy for the first occasion while Boston were also seeking to be only the second side outside the top flight to lift the trophy. Boston batted first and lost two early wickets before County Under 17star,  Jonathan Cheer took the game by the throat and played a competent innings of  55. When he went Tom Baxter took up the mantle and he helped the Boston side to a total of 182-5 with an unbeaten 49. Leading wicket take was Jonny Drabble with 2-35 but he also saw two further wickets cancelled out to “no balls” which might well have reduced the good total posted.  When Scothern batted they were never able to get their innings going, losing early wickets. Only opener Steve Leak made any sort of score and when he was dismissed for 64, the top score of the match, the Scothern innings soon came to a close on 106, 76 runs short of the target, Pick of the Boston bowlers was Paul Timby with 4-16.

In the Premier League Morton failed to close the gap on leaders Cherry Willingham as they lost their unbeaten home record against Martin. Batting first they made only 140 which Martin reached for the loss of five wickets with opener Dave Newman making 55 and taking his aggregate runs in the league to 464 this season. Victory for Martin saw them climb up to third, their highest position of the season since coming up.

In Division One, second placed Nettleham 1st were taken to the wire by mid table Washingborough 1st before winning by the narrow margin of 6 runs. Opener Dave Lea (62) and Rob Cook shared a third wicket stand of 85 to help Nettleham to a total of 213-5 (the highest score of the day). Then in reply Washingborough’s opener Mark Willey looked as if he was going to win the game single handed. He shared a third wicket stand of 87 with Chas Coupland (36) but then, with nine required for victory, Willey was run out for 103 and then one run later Matt Smith picked up his fifth wicket to end the Washingborough innings, just six runs from the target. Although Smith took the plaudits for his 5-45, Nettleham have certainly unearthed one for the future in 13 year old Jack Elley who bowled two spells to have the more than excellent figures of 8-4-8-0 when the opposition made over 200 runs. Third placed Middle Rasen remain in contention for one of the promotion places, waiting for any errors by the top two. They visited fourth placed Old Lincolnians and came away with a resounding eight wicket victory. They bowled the home side out for just 69 with Simon Bunn taking 4-10 Then they reached the poor total for the loss of two wickets which sees them just twenty three points behind Nettleham with a game in hand. Also in this division Saxilby continue their improved form as they picked up their second win of the season with a big win over second to bottom side Bassingham. Saxilby posted a score of 202-9 with Ian Burnett in the runs, making 79. The visitors were then bowled out for 76, losing by 126 runs. Victory took Saxilby to a mid table position just three points behind fourth placed Old Lincolnians.

In Division Two previous leaders Waddington saw their losing run continue as they lost for the third successive game against Nettleham 2nd who picked up their first win of the season, last week. If the Nettleham 1st XI game was a close finish against Washingborough, their second string took it even closer. Waddington must have felt they were on a winner, bowling their opponents out for 103 but they in turn were dismissed for 99, to lose by just four runs, the second closest finish of the season. While Waddington’s season has stumbled, Carholme have quietly climbed up the table. Visiting fourth placed Fulbeck they batted first, making 188-9 with Neil Evans making 79. Then they bowled the home side out for only 65 with Steve Peace picking up the first eight wicket haul of the season with 8-24.  This was the sixth five wicket (or more) haul by Carholme this season and their fifth different bowler to do so. Picking up a fourth successive win moved Carholme above Waddington, into second place. While Fulbeck were losing, Bardney moved above them, as their game against Aisthorpe was called off. Another side seeing their previous winning run evaporate is Branston who lost for a second successive weekend. They hosted Hykeham who batted first and made 174 with Paul Bassingthwaite top scoring with 89. In reply the home side were only able to make 119, losing by 55 runs.

Like their first team, Boston 2nd were not in league action, which gave the chasing teams the opportunity to claw back some of their lead, although they now have two games in hand on all the others. Closest rival Heckington continue to be the most consistent side in the league as they picked up an excellent eight successive win. Seeking their second double of the season they visited Ruskington Millers and Chris Morley made 59 as they set a total of 193-8. Millers had some success with Ady Robinson taking 5-42 but when they batted they could muster only 77 all out, to lose by 116 runs. Third placed Rustons, who themselves were looking for a fourth win in a row and a league double, entertained fifth placed Heighington. Martin Noble claimed 5-30 for the home side as Heighington recorded just 136 with Keith Duke scoring almost half of these, making 64. Rustons were unable to cope with the bowling of Ian Tomlinson who picked up his second five wicket haul of the season with 5-12 as Rustons were bowled out for 75. Victory for Heighington allowed them to climb above Rustons into third position, just nine points adrift of Heckington. Fifth placed South Clifton reaped revenge on their long trip to Aswarby.  In the corresponding game they had lost by nine wickets but on this occasion it was they who won by this score-line as they bowled Aswarby out for the weekends’ lowest score of 46. Finally sixth placed Owmby, also took revenge for an early season defeat, when they entertained Nocton, who had won just once since their first meeting.  Owmby’s Sam Naughton was in the runs again as he hit the top individual score of the weekend with 109. He scored over half his sides total of 206-4 while Dave Franklin was Nocton’s best bowler with 3-41. Nocton’s reply saw only two players make double figures as Cameron Donald made (20) and David Glew (15) in a total of 65.  Sam Atkin picked up 5-17.

Again, with just a few exceptions, runs were in abundance this weekend. Several records were won and lost with Division One leaders Boston 1st seeing their unbeaten record vanish and Nettleham 2nd, in Division Two, picking up their first win of the season. Premier side Martin hit the seasons’ third highest score of this year while Division Three side Ruskington Millers registered the seasons’ second lowest score.

In the Premier League inactive leaders Cherry Willingham saw their lead cut back as Morton closed the gap to 46 points and with a game in hand they could reduce it even further. With only one defeat to their name Morton visited Lindum where the home side posted an imposing total of 193-4. Pierce Morley- Barnes and Harry Dunn gave Lindum a great start with a stand of 76 before the former went for 40. Dunn they saw good support from Josh Brodie who made a similar 40. Dunn was eventually out for a top score of 69.  Morton’s reply saw a similar 76 opening stand between Steve Crookes (23) and Simon Turner (46) but man of the match for the visitors was Chris Needham who made an unbeaten 54 to see his side to victory with three balls to spare. Top bowler for Lindum was 13 year old Jake Benson who took 2-21. Third placed Hartsholme’s challenge took a serious knock as they surprisingly lost at home to Blankney. Blankney were allowed to set a target of 177-5 with five of their top six batsmen all making scores of 20 or more, including a top score of 58 from Richard Strong.  The home sides innings got off to the worst possible start with Will Carter picked up the first three wickets (two caught and bowled) with only 12 on the board. Hartsholme never recovered from this although Jack McGovern made 51; he was eventually out on the last ball of the game to a stunning one handed catch by Carter with the total on 114. Carter had figures of 10-4-16-3 and he and Ian Holvey restricted the home side to 36-3 off the twenty overs, including ten maidens. The biggest score of the day was at Martin who recorded the third highest total of the season in their game against the luckless Market Rasen. It also included the second highest individual score and third highest partnership of this campaign. Martin batted first and after losing Stuart Gollop for 23 with the total on 64, Dave Newman and Dave Gollop then put on 190 for the second wicket. Newman was out for 148 and Gollop shortly after for 74. The innings closed on 305-3 with Steve Scott 39 not out. Rasen were never in the race as Scott and Ryan Simpkins took three wickets each and from 84-3 the visitors were all out for 98. Scott took 3-33 and Simpkins 3-25 with Priestley collecting the final two wickets without conceding a run as Martin won by 207 runs, the second highest winning margin of the season.

In Division One there was a top of the table clash at Nettleham 1st  between them and unbeaten leaders Boston 1st . Victory for Boston could have taken them 80 points clear but Nettleham had different ideas. Boston batted first and if Jonathan Cheer had not carried his bat with 100 not out the visitors total of 155-8 would have been a sorry affair. Only Tom Baxter (20) and Colin Cheer (12) of the remaining batsmen made double figures as Rob Cook took 5-25. Nettleham did not have things all their own way in reply, losing six wickets on route to victory. Top scorer was Phil Brown with 60 not out, supported by Russ Binnington (28) and Danny McCardell (22). Tom Baxter was Boston’s most successful bowler with 3-27 as the title race is back on with Nettleham now only 37 points behind, with a game in hand. Not to be considered out of the title race third placed Middle Rasen completed their first league double of the season in emphatic still as they beat their visitors, the much improved Bassingham. Bassingham batted first, making only 118 which was achieved by Rasen for the loss of just one wicket. This weekend Rasen’s all-rounder Karl Bierlein showed his batting skills hitting an unbeaten 68 after his 6-23 last week with the ball,. Middle Rasen have one game in hand over second placed Nettleham and two over Boston and are just 23 points behind Nettleham.

In Division Two it was again the story of BBH’s 15 year old opener, Kit Spence who followed up his maiden century of last week to carry his bat with an unbeaten 94 against neighbours Branston this week. Home side Branston needed victory to keep their “promotion” momentum going but came up against another side in form. BBH batted first posting a total of 202-5. Spence face 106 balls for his 94 (including 10 x 4 and 1 x 6) with his best partnership, a sixth wicket stand of 81 with Mark Law who hit 46 in 16 balls (including 3 x 4 and 4 x 6’s). Pick of the Branston bowlers was Nick Robson with 2-38. Branston’s reply saw them three down for just nine runs but they recovered as their next four batsmen all made 20 plus scores. Eventually they came within 24 runs of their target before the overs ran out. Top scorers were C. Dowson 56 and Steve Crawford 47while Lee Wright took 3-50 for the victors. While BBH were extending their lead at the top, third placed Bardney’s season was continuing to come off the rails as they plummeted to another defeat, this time at home to Carholme. Bardney posted a score of just 68 which was reached with the loss of five wickets by Carholme. Fourth placed Fulbeck moved level on points with Bardney as they won, as expected, against bottom side Aisthorpe. Aisthorpe batted first and saw opener Mike Reynolds (60) and Eddie Tyrell (32) put on 84 for the second wicket but when they had gone only J. Bennett (16) made double figure scores as they closed on 142-7. N. Evans took 4-31 for the home side who then won inside 33 overs with Anil Gajjar making a top score of 41. At the bottom of the league it was a first win for Nettleham 2nd who visited Hykeham. The home side batted first but some excellent bowling from Nettleham’s youngsters Tom Dalton 3.4-0-7-4 and Alex Graham        4-2-7-3 saw them bowled out inside 25 overs for 90. Top scorer was Paul Bassingthwaite, one of only three players to make double figures, who made 29. Fifteen year old Dalton then carried his bat with 57 as Nettleham picked up a much needed victory.

In Division Three leaders Boston 2nd, not for the first time, were gifted maximum points as their opponents Aswarby failed to raise a side (for the second occasion this season). Also picking up maximum points were second placed Heckington who hosted second to bottom Nocton. The visitors were bowled out for 82 which was reached by Heckington for the loss of two wickets. After their poor result of the previous week Heighington got back to winning ways as they overcame visitors Owmby whose season had fallen apart recently as they had not seen a game completed since 22 June.  Heighington batted first making 157-6 with Liam Hargrave top scorer on 48 and Martyn Snell the best bowler with 3-27. Owmby in reply saw Snell make 23 and Kev Bowring 35 not out but they failed to keep up with the run rate and were 54 runs short at the close with three wickets in hand.  Pick of the home bowlers was Ralph Slaney with 4-18 from his ten overs. Finally in this league it was all about the “lows” of the weekend as newcomers Ruskington Millers posted the seasons’ second lowest total as they were bowled out by their visitors Rustons for just 20. Picking up his first ever five wicket haul for Rustons was A. Gooch who took 5-10. Rustons lost two wickets before passing the target but victory saw them climb to the dizzy heights of third.

In the Saturday League results went much to form with leaders Morton 2nd forging ahead of an inactive Saxilby 2nd as they won at home against bottom side Washingborough 2nd. Morton batted first making 184 with Simon Turner again in the runs as he top scored with 89. Washingborough were then bowled out for 97. The visitors did have some success with C. Morris collecting the best bowling figures of the weekend with 6-49. Third placed Timberland closed the gap on Saxilby to seven points as they won at Reepham. Here Reepham were bowled out for 91 allowing timberland to win by seven wickets.
